Luke Has Busy Week Fielding Interviews About Nevin Shapiro

The University of Miami football program’s biggest fan has spent the past week dousing claims by ex-UM booster and convicted ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro comparing himself to Uncle Luke and that he provided 72 former and current players with improper benefits for almost a decade. In a nutshell, Luke is angry and upset Shapiro dubbed himself “Little Luke.” Rightfully so. Luke’s involvement with youth athletics is all about community service, while Shapiro was all about getting his and screw everybody else.

A rundown of Luke’s appearances appears after the jump:

All Not Golden With Miami Hurricanes Football

Everybody wants to know how I feel about the new University of Miami head football coach Al Golden. Like many Canes fans and local sports media pundits, I didn’t know much about the man Kirby Hocutt selected to replace Randy Shannon. Through my twitter feed, I found out Golden played linebacker for Joe Paterno and that he took Temple University out of the dog house.

But I also found out some other things that worry me like the fact Golden never beat a Mid-America Conference team with a winning record and that his overall record is 26-38. When you analyze Golden’s overall record, I can’t help but think what the heck is the University of Miami doing?

Uncle Luke Claims Randy Shannon To Texas Done Deal, Longhorns Spokesman Won’t Confirm

Miami New Times columnist and volunteer high school football coach Luther Campbell has got the sports media blogs jumping on his Twitter feed. Deadspin just posted an item about Campbell’s tweet that Randy Shannon, recently fired as the University of Miami’s football head coach, has accepted the defensive coordinator job with the Texas Longhorns. Campbell also boldly claims Shannon is “now the head coach in waiting” until Mack Brown calls it quits — something that should make Randy hating Canes fans snicker.

However, University of Texas football spokesman John Bianco won’t tell us if Uncle Luke got himself a scoop. We emailed Bianco earlier this morning, asking if he could confirm Campbell’s tweet.

We received this terse response via Bianco’s iPhone: “No.”

Shannon allegedly took his name out of the running for Kentucky’s head coach position when Texas’ defensive coordinator job opened up over the weekend after Will Muschamp agreed to take over the Florida Gators program from Urban Meyer.

High School Football Coaches Deserve More Cash

Florida — and Miami-Dade — seriously need to change the way high school football coaches are treated. I am a volunteer assistant coach for the Miami Central High School Rockets, so I know the amount of time and effort my colleagues put into preparing teenage boys for adulthood. Football is bigger here than in 47 of the 50 states.

These coaches are not being fairly compensated. Consider Texas, which is number two after California. In 2006, the Austin American-Statesman revealed that head coaches in classes 5A and 4A — schools with 950 or more students — made an average of $73,804 annually while teachers averaged about $42,400. The article cited then-Texas education commissioner Shirley Neeley: “Those football coaches put in more hours than people realize.”
