Urban Meyer Leaves UF to Protect His Legacy

urbanmeyer

This week, Luke probes Urban Meyer’s resignation as head coach of University of Florida’s football team.

Urban Meyer is not retiring because of chest pains or other health problems. He’s leaving because he doesn’t want to rebuild the Gators’ football program. He announced he was going to leave when Tim Tebow left last year, but changed his mind shortly before the Southeastern Conference Championship Game because he knew his story about being sick wasn’t flying. Meyer is leaving the University of Florida because he doesn’t want to tarnish his legacy.

This is not the type of coach who wants to be part of rebuilding a program after a couple of down years. At the University of Florida, it is only going to get worse before it gets better again. I don’t think Meyer wants to put his family through the grinder that comes with losing, especially in today’s social media age.

Uncle Luke Claims Randy Shannon To Texas Done Deal, Longhorns Spokesman Won’t Confirm

shannon

Miami New Times columnist and volunteer high school football coach Luther Campbell has got the sports media blogs jumping on his Twitter feed. Deadspin just posted an item about Campbell’s tweet that Randy Shannon, recently fired as the University of Miami’s football head coach, has accepted the defensive coordinator job with the Texas Longhorns. Campbell also boldly claims Shannon is “now the head coach in waiting” until Mack Brown calls it quits — something that should make Randy hating Canes fans snicker.

However, University of Texas football spokesman John Bianco won’t tell us if Uncle Luke got himself a scoop. We emailed Bianco earlier this morning, asking if he could confirm Campbell’s tweet.

We received this terse response via Bianco’s iPhone: “No.”

Shannon allegedly took his name out of the running for Kentucky’s head coach position when Texas’ defensive coordinator job opened up over the weekend after Will Muschamp agreed to take over the Florida Gators program from Urban Meyer.

Randy’s Gone, But Will Donna Shalala and Kirby Hocutt Step Up?

This week, Uncle Luke comes to terms with the end of the Randy Shannon era.

Saturday was one of the saddest days for Miami-Dade’s African American community with the firing of Randy Shannon as the University of Miami’s head football coach. At the end of the day, I can’t argue with athletic director Kirby Hocutt’s decision to let Shannon go, but his dismissal still hurts.

I haven’t hidden the fact that Shannon is a dear friend of mine, but his ascendancy to the top job of the Hurricanes program meant a lot to blacks. He was one of the few people of color to have a very high profile job in this town. We already know it is virtually impossible that a black person will ever be elected county mayor or be selected to be county manager, so seeing Shannon, a hometown guy, reach the mountain top was something the African American community could be proud of and aspire to.

People Expect Obama to Be SuperNegro

superobama

Despite the mess he inherited from George W. Bush, Barack Obama has been doing an excellent job his first two years in office. It’s like when Randy Shannon replaced Larry Coker as University of Miami football coach. Coker had screwed up the program so Donna Shalala brought in Shannon to fix it. When shit gets really messed up, you give the job to the black man. So if he doesn’t succeed right away, it’s easier to push him out before he even has a chance to prove himself.

Obama took over the country on the brink of a depression. The government was broken, the banking system blew up, and we were engaged in two wars that cost us billions of dollars a day. It couldn’t have been worse. I ask myself all the time why Obama would want his job.
